At the heart of our bakery is Confelicity – the joy found in the happiness of others. We bake to bring people together, to offer kindness through food, and to make sure everyone has a seat at the table. A compound of the Latin words ‘con’ (“with”) and ‘felicitas’ (“happiness” or “good fortune”), literally meaning “shared happiness”.
From freshly baked and naturally leavened sourdough bread to decadent sweet treats and mindful seasonal dishes, everything we make is crafted with care and just happens to be gluten-free.
We popped in to the newly opened Confelicity Bakery in Bruntsfield this morning (167 Bruntsfield Place), and it felt like all my Christmasses had come at once! Everything in this bakery/ café is gluten free!! But you wouldn't know it just from tasting it. I had my gluten eating husband and son with me, and they said they couldn't tell the difference. We tried some of the samples on offer - including the seeded loaf, loaded banana bread, cherry brownie, almond & lemon sponge, and scone (that sounds really greedy, but they were just wee bites to help you decide what to buy) - and....wow! I'm not exaggerating when I say the bread is the best GF bread I've ever eaten - and that includes baking my own bread - and a whole loaf came home with me! Worth every penny. All three of us also agreed that the cake samples all tasted amazing, and we stayed to enjoy a full size of the loaded banana bread along with some coffees and a hot chocolate for the little one. I don't actually have a majorly sweet tooth, and more often than not gluten free cakes tend to be overly sweet, but these were just the right balance without making you feel you're about to go in to a sugar coma. They're also offering soup and sandwiches, with a small selection of fillings to choose from, so I will definitely be back for a sit-down lunch soon. Whether you're a coeliac or gluten intolerant and looking for somewhere to safely enjoy a coffee & cake or stop for lunch, or one of the lucky people who can eat everything and just in search of sensationally good cake and bread, you will not be disappointed. The staff are really lovely and welcoming too. It's a double thumbs up from me, would definitely highly recommend! TLDR: Best bread I've ever eaten, amazing cakes, and you'd never tell they're gluten free. Check it out, you won't regret it!
